How GM Lighting’s LED Sheet Fixture Enables Creative Applications and Solutions for Commercial and Residential Spaces
It’s been over 4 years since GM Lighting launched its flexible LED sheet, Lamina. Shortly after launch, we received a video from a lighting contractor in Brooklyn, NY. The video demonstrated a unique bathroom make over. It was not your ordinary run-of-the-mill change out of decor, install a new shower and call it a day type of video. We’ve all seen those. This one was different. It showed a team of diligent craftspeople cutting, shaping and installing Lamina as the backlight for custom cut marble-textured acrylic veneers that provided a sensual surrounding of light, texture and ambience. This video was not just an installation video – it was a master class in lighting design, and at the forefront of the design was Lamina.

We knew then that Lamina could make a huge impact in the lighting industry, and now we want to make sure that the potential of this amazing LED Light Sheet that we call Lamina is realized.
In architectural lighting, the difference between illumination and inspiration often comes down to flexibility. Traditional backlighting systems have long forced designers, fabricators, and specifiers into rigid rectangular or round formats, bulky housings, and complicated installation requirements. Today’s hospitality, retail, residential, and commercial environments demand something more dynamic.
This is why we introduced GM Lighting’s Lamina LED Light Sheets – a 12” x 12” ultra-thin, flexible, field-cuttable LED lighting solution designed to transform ordinary surfaces into extraordinary architectural statements.
Lamina is no ordinary backlight. Available in a variety of Kelvin color temperatures, as well as colorful RGBW, Lamina brings out the magic in translucent stone, acrylic, resin panels, decorative glass, countertops, or custom artistic installations. Lamina opens the door to creative interpretations that blend light and texture.
The Lamina Difference
Traditional LED backlighting systems often require designers to work around the lighting. Lamina flips that concept entirely. Instead of forcing creativity into predefined shapes and dimensions, Lamina allows the lighting to adapt to the design.
Ultra-Thin Design
At only 2mm thin, Lamina virtually disappears behind translucent materials while delivering smooth, even illumination with minimal depth requirements. This makes it ideal for shallow installations where conventional LED panels simply won’t fit.
Field-Cuttable Flexibility
One of Lamina’s most powerful advantages is its ability to be cut into custom shapes directly in the field. Designers are no longer restricted to squares and rectangles. Lamina adapts to broad curves and can adopt organic shapes. This enables a new ability to create original lighting schemes through pattern and placement.
Easy Sheet-to-Sheet Connectivity
Lamina’s connection system allows installers to quickly expand illuminated surfaces while maintaining clean, uniform performance across the installation.

This scalability makes it ideal for:
Stand-Off Mounting Options
GM Lighting’s Lamina stand-offs add additional dimensional flexibility, creating floating illuminated effects that enhance visual depth and sophistication.
The result is a system that feels engineered for both creativity and practicality.
Lamina Reborn: The Future of Architectural Backlighting
Architectural lighting continues to evolve toward integrated experiences where surfaces themselves become sources of illumination. Lamina represents that evolution – an evolution where light does not merely shine – it lives. Light is a language of life. Instead of treating light as a fixture, Lamina surrounds us in light as part of a meaningful relationship between environment and architecture.
